Hey there, I am excited to write this blog post but it also involves some vulnerability. I am here to share my journey as a black Jamaican woman living an thriving beyond the complexities of lupus.
I really want people to know that lupus is not just a medical tale, it's a real chronic illness. This is a story of empowerment, education and being able to face the challenges that will come your way.
Let's talk about Lupus
First, what is Lupus? Also called the invisible disease is a complex, chronic autoimmune disease which cause your immune system to mistakenly attack your healthy tissues and cells. It can lead to chronic inflammation and damage various parts of the body. It is unpredictable, sometimes exhausting and it's still a mystery. Yes, it is complex
Living with lupus isn't just about the medical term or even the endless doctor visits. It's about waking up everyday and reminding myself that I am not defined by my diagnosis. It's about having the courage to face the unknown of what this disease will do to my body.
My Journey and Strength
As black woman living with lupus and navigating the world at the same time, I've found strength and courage in the stories of other resilient women who look like me. Representation does matter and sharing our experiences can be a ray of hope for someone else on a similar journey. There is power in our struggles and triumphs.
Education... our greatest weapon
When they knowledge is power, they weren't lying. Understanding lupus, its flares, symptoms and the impact it has on your mental health is like arming yourself with the best defense there is.
Through my own journey, I've learned to as the right questions and advocate for myself and others, especially for those who just started their lupus journey.
Community and Support
What makes the journey less bumpy and lonely is community. Whether it's my family, friends, colleagues or other lupus warriors that I've developed and online with. Having a support system is like having a safe space to be vulnerable when life becomes overwhelming.
Beyond my Lupus Diagnosis
Beyond lupus is about not allowing the diagnosis to define who we are. It's about finding joy and celebrating small wins or victories, embracing the beauty of life despite all the challenges that you will face, and always being fierce.
I am always hear to listen, learn and grow together as warriors. Because there's an entire world of education, empowerment and endless possibilities to explore beyond lupus.
Stay strong, bless, curious and remember we're on this journey together.
With love, Yenika
